Venture Genetics was created in April 2008 shortly after the Arron Doon Holsteins dispersal. With 12 polled animals selling for an average of over $12,000, it was evident to those who attended this sale that polled genetics are in demand, and the secret is out. 5 of the top 6 polled animals were purchased by 3 different young breeders, all with the same desire to take polled Holsteins to the next level. After several meetings it became obvious there was a great opportunity to put them all into one breeding and investor group.


Unlike the recessive Red gene, the polled gene is Dominant, so it can be established in a herd or cow family very quickly. Just imagine the producer that has to dehorn hundreds, or even thousands of calves, and the realistic value of the polled gene becomes quite clear. The advantages of polled are obvious, and the benefits are real from a labour, and management standpoint, as well as humane reasons.



If you think about the R&W Holstein for a moment, it is truly amazing what has happened in such a short period of time. In the very late 1990’s very few Red, or *RC sires were available, and many A.I’s did not carry any sires of Red colour at all. Now almost every A.I world wide is carrying many different Red, or *RC sires, and virtually every major cow family world wide is now affected by this. We believe that breeding for polled will have a similar effect, and that breeding for polled can, and will become much more than just a niche, or novelty, market.
